Comments This is muck diving at its best. Maluku Divers is just a short distance by van to the airport and is a small but well-designed and comfortable resort. Cottages were spacious with AC and fans. Beds were comfortable and décor was understated and attractive. Food was terrific and all meals were served. Special needs (of which I have few to none) appeared to be attended to.

Service on and off the boats was terrific and there were no complaints. I had gear problems and they were able to provide quick fixes when I thought I might have to skip a dive.

The diving was as advertised and I got to check more critters off my to-see bucket list than just about anywhere I have been. Nudis were everywhere along with Rhinopias, Cuttle Fish, Pipefish, Seahorses, Frogfish -- etc. of all varieties. The only negative was something they could not do anything about -- the amount of trash that ends up in the ocean next to the critters after it has been raining. This problem will be familiar to those who have dived in Lembeh. At Ambon there seems to be some effort to educate the locals about modern trash and the damage it is doing. In the old days it was all organic so everything broke down. But, as with many problems like this, understanding and change comes slowly.

UW Photo Comments Ambon is photographers who travel from all over the world to get their fill of the weird and wonderful critters that reside in the sand and rubble. Maluku Divers caters to them with the most amazing facilities for underwater photographers I have yet come across. Not one or two, but SEVERAL LARGE CAMERA SOAKING BINS sit next to showers and gear storage areas so rarely does your camera's rig ever have to come in contact with another while it is soaking and waiting for you to strip off your wetsuit, clean off and put your gear away. Dive guides tote your cameras to and from the dive boats in large padded bags where they stay protected at the front of the boat until you are in the water and they hand them to you. Then they go right back afterwards after dives until it is time to bring them to the soaking bins. Compressed air is readily available from several sources next to the bins and the camera room which is spacious and beautiful. I didn't use it because each room has two long work counters with ample electrical outlets so photographers can, if they choose, do their work in their rooms.
