Comments Ambon is a hidden gem in the diving world. It is known as a muck diving location equal to, if perhaps not as extensive, as Lembeh, but is infrequently traveled due to suspicions of possible Muslim-Christian unrest which has plagued this area in years past. During my week there however I felt totally safe, as did other westerners staying with me, and it is important to note the fact that no westerner has been harmed in this area, according to a recent Fathoms report, since World War 2. The religious uprising was between local neighbors and had nothing to do with international issues, and has been over for several years. Ambon seemed totally serene and peaceful to me. Anyway, enough said about this issue. Muck diving and critter diving was first rate, the late Larry Smith, Indonesia's most famous dive guide, has said the house reef has the best night dive he'd ever done. Tons of unusual crabs (decorators, hermits, large reef0, as well as other denizens such as flounders, crocodile fish, etc. The muck diving offered rhinopias sightings, wonderpuss, mating cuttlefish, frogfish the size of dinner plates, snakefish, juvenile blue ribbon eels, pipefish, snake eels, mantis shrimps, stonefish, dragonettes, leaf scorpion fish, and several flourescently colored fire urchins of various species. But the biggest surprise for me was the reef diving. At a site called three islands, I was treated to 200 ft. visibility, cascades of redtooth trigger fish and fusiliers, sea snakes, beautiful coral of all hues, and sightings of gigantic napoleon wrasse and potato cod. At a sight called the arch, fantastic underwater and topside topography as well as great fish and coral life. Ditto for a site called the cave. These sites reminded me very much of the blue holes in Palau, but with better life and fewer divers. There is also a great wreck dive on a large WW2 tanker sunk in about 80 to 100 ft of water. Ambon makes a great addition to liveaboard trips going from Sorong to Ambon, which is how I ended up trying it out. The muck diving in particular was a great contrast and addition to the many wonderful reef dives experienced while on my liveaboard.
Maluku divers goes the extra mile to satisfy their customers, at least they did so for me, helping with logistical or any other needs. Lodging is comfortable, clean, attractive, and nice. Food is first rate Indonesian fare. Dive guides were helpful and fun. All in all, for anyone looking for a unique diving adventure off the beaten track, this is an excellent option.
