Comments This is our third trip to Kungkungan Bay Resort (KBR) and we were not disappointed; it's unlikely to be our last. Had 12 days this time around.

Resort is ideally set up for diving and unlike most in the area is waterfront meaning no hills to climb from dive to resort to restaurant etc (except for the "hillside villa"). The bar is up one flight of stairs and the highest point above sea level we achieved in our time here. Roll out of bed, eat breakfast - on your balcony if staying in a beach front villa, stroll 20m to dive centre and onto the diveboats for an average 5-10 minute trip to site.

The closest thing to liveaboard diving ashore; the best of both world - multiple dives - easy to do four a day with house reef or night dive - food at any time (yes 24 hours), with rooms far more spacious than any liveaboard for that bit more space during deco times and attentive, friendly staff all around.

As implied - staff are excellent and service attentive from the very friendly employees. Dive centre is well run with guides and boat crew eager to help. Restaurant is wellcoming, efficient and ALWAYS a la carte no buffets to negotiate. Welcoming bar above the restaurant, now serving a selction of bar food plates if you prefer not to decamp to the restaurant - which was being renovated and may now be finished). The Spa treatments are also welcoming and well executed.

Diving:- muck diving of unrivalled varierty (in our experince - yes there are some individual sites elsewhere are great; however there are numerous fantastic dive sites in the Lembeh straights within 10 minutes of the dock). Sites vary from pure muck, though sand, rubble on to coral enhancing the variety of critters found.

Our highlights (of many, many great critters including pygmy seahorse, mantis shrimp (with eggs on one occasion), cuttlefish etc)

Hairy Octopus
Blue Ring Octopus
Mimic
Dozens of varieties of nudibranch's, flatworms etc
Frogfish - many varieties
Ambon Scorpionfish

But at number 1 for this trip - spending 5-10 minutes watching a flamboyant cuttlefish hatch...Spectacular (which sums up diving here - so long as you're not looking for crystal clear coral reefs!!)

The Bad - its' 24 hours & two flights from Europe so no good for us for a long weekend, unfortunately..

Subject Matter 5 stars Boat Facilities 4 stars
Overall rating for UWP's 5 stars Shore Facilities 5 stars
UW Photo Comments Large camera room and two dedicated rinse tanks, dive crew carry cameras in individual baskets from rinse tanks to dive boats for short trip to site. Many charging points & lots of space.

Mainly critter and macro photography; there are a couple of sites suitable for wide angle but at most sites water clarity & visibility would preculde this and it would be rare to set up for wide angle with the subject matter generally available here.

Dive guides are expert at spotting great subject matter. Only four divers per dive guide (Lembeh straight condition).
