Comments Gangga Island Resort and Spa. This was our favorite dive trip of all time. Dives were about 25 - 30 minutes boat ride on smooth ocean to the sites. The water was very warm and appeared clean at the sites, although there were some currents flowing around the islands with lots of plastic garbage flowing like a river. The garbage was supposedly blamed on the ships passing through the waters who throw everything overboard. But, the dive sites were all free of garbage under water so it must be floating around the world to who knows where with the currents. The dive boats and staff were well organized. Staff took great care of all of our gear before and after each dive. We didn't have to worry about how they put our rig together after the first time we showed them how we liked it. We did reef dives, wall dives, a cave dive, some current dives with amazing blooming soft corals, muck dives, and fields of healthy hard corals, many tiny and amazing crabs of all types. Some reefs had tons of colorful fish of all sizes. This is the healthiest reef diving we have ever experienced. The dive guides were trained to show you the most tiny, amazing critters and after a while I was telling the quide we wanted to spend more time at the colorful reef and fish areas. That didn't work with our guide though, he always drifted toward some muck area to show us some small thing. If we dive here again (and I would like to go again) I will insist to the guide that we want to spend most of our dive at the colorful reef areas. And almost every dive had those beautiful areas, just amazing. Fishing is allowed all over these oceans so the bigger fish are fished out. It would pay for these islands to establish a Marine Reserve somewhere like Bunaken Island has done. There were day boats that gave the option to go to Lembeh Straights or Bunaken Island and several groups went and enjoyed those days. We had already been to those places last year so we dove mostly around Bangka, and Talise Islands and a few dives on North Sulawesi.
The resort was comfortable and all the staff were happy and respectful. Everything was clean in our room. The restaurant areas were clean, the food was so good. 5 course meals on a menu that changed daily. We met other guests and shared tables for some meals. When the resort became more full they had buffet meals that were delicious. The wait staff were so polite and happy. I just can't say enough about the attitude of all staff.
The spa was very nice. We had several massages, very reasonably priced.
The internet is only available in the dining area and most of our stay it was not functioning. So, if you need internet on your trip you might want to inquire if it has been repaired.
The resort grounds were beautiful. The generators do make some noise, they are near the back of the resort and this noise bothered me at first but I soon became used to it and relaxed into the vacation mode. And the staff swept up leaves all day long then burned them each day at the back of the resort and the smoke sometimes came towards the bungalows and restaurant but the breeze blew it away quickly.
Yes, we will go back to Gangga Island Resort someday. But, next trip we will want to see some bigger fish for a change. Perhaps Palau or Fiji.

Thanks for this review. I am currently looking at places in N. Sulawesi to go for a few days. I just spent two weeks diving Fiji in August 2012. Both Taveuni and Bligh Waters/Vatu I Ra (Wananavu Resort, highly recommended). Anyway, loved Fiji, but don't go for big fish, as there are none! We saw plenty of small reef sharks, but no other big fish. Not a single ray and only 3 turtles in 9 days diving. That said, coral health and density, colors, soft corals = amazing.

if you want to see many weird and wonderful creatures in grey sand, dive lembe strait. If you want a luxuriously relaxing and comfy few days, stay at gangga resort and dive bangga island. You can see everything. SOme slight currents but currents=big fish. gorgeous reefs off bangga.
