Comments This was the first backpacker-type dive operation I've dove with, so it was a new experience. Just a dive shop on Ambon Bay, run by the owner/manager but staffed by young people from around the world and couple local dive guides. I was told I could do several boat dives over the 3 days I was there (between other dive destinations) but I ended up doing almost all shore diving and only about 3 sites total. Surface intervals were spent sitting around the shop, identifying critters. Food was available for lunch.

This was my second time in Ambon. I think it is some of the very best muck diving anywhere. I've been several other places that specialize in muck diving, but the variety of critters in Ambon is mind-blowing. This trip did not disappoint. From 40 different kinds of nudis on one dive, to multiple rhinopias, hairy frogfish, to different types of shrimp, crab (lots of different decorator crabs), octopus, cuttlefish, etc. It's hard to overstate the variety of things listed in my log book.

Dive guides were great at finding stuff.

Depending on the tides, there can be enough current to make you work to stay in the same place.

The bay is also amazing - although it's quite populated, lots of shipping, city - large animals come through. From shore we saw a thresher shark go by - could tell by the tail.

Did you have to quarantine 7 days in Jakarta or Manado, before going on to Ambon?
