Comments After a live-aboard trip across the Banda Sea, I wanted to see the Komodo Dragons and do some diving but didn’t have time to do a live-aboard in Komodo. So in the few days available I did a typical day trip of hiking, dragon watching and snorkeling followed by two days of shore-based diving with Blue Marlin. BTW, some of the snorkel beaches had amazing sea life in less than 10' of water.

Blue Marlin has a few boats, but I chose the “Toby” which is a fast boat. This allowed 3 dives with 1 hr surface intervals and still get back by mid-afternoon. The boat only holds 12 divers (including guides and instructors). There is a maximum of 4 divers per guide. The tanks are spaced widely and there is plenty of room to gear-up without bouncing off your neighbor. Nitrox is free! Briefings were very thorough which was especially important due to the currents at some sites. Entry was a back roll off the sides. On returning, most of us took off and handed up our gear since the ladder is narrow and vertical. The only down-side is that there is no rinse tank for cameras. The day boats tend to attract less experienced divers who don’t have big rigs.

My 6 dives were all on the north side of Komodo Island. Crystal Rock had ripping currents (horizontal and vertical) with a reef hook a must. Then just hang on and watch the parade of big schools of jacks, white and grey tip reef sharks and other fish. Makassar Reef (Manta Point) had a procession of large reef mantas using the cleaning stations. This location is also popular for snorkel boats due to good vis and relatively shallow depth. Mawan also had a few big mantas plus 2 frog fish sitting in a sea fan. Other sites had good coral gardens, many nudis, turtles and schools of fish.

If you only have a few days in Komodo and want to do some shore-based diving, Blue Marlin is a good bet.
