Comments My wife and I added a day of diving in Bali, after our 10 days on a live-aboard, in hopes of being able to see the elusive Mola-mola (ocean sunfish). Picked Bali Scuba based on their web site and a phone conversation with store. Mola-mola season doesn't start until August, but the other dive operators all promised we'd see them. Bali Scuba was the only honest dive operator who told us the season hadn't started and we might not be able to see them. Booked a 3-tank dive day with Bali Scuba due to their honesty. Bali Scuba picked us up at our hotel and transported us and our equipment to their shop. Check-in procedures were quick and mostly organized. Bali Scuba even transfered our gear from our hard side dive bags into mesh "boat bags". We then departed the shop to the Sanur beach area where the dive boats were moored. All of the dive operators in Bali use the same type of 30' speed boat to make the 45 minute commute from Sanur to Nusa Penida. Once on board the "Bali Scuba 2", we set up our gear and then departed to Nusa Penida. There were a total of 6 divers, 2 DMs, and 2 crew on the boat. Not a lot of room, but enough. Boat was equipped with marine head, emergency gear, but surprisingly no radio. I looked at the other dive boats in the area and none of them appeared to have radios either. Locals appeared to use cell phones versus radios. Seas were mainly calm and transit to Nusa Penida was uneventful. My wife and I were assigned our own DM, who also had a IDC candidate tagging along. Short briefing was given by other DM, but since my wife and I were more experienced than our DM, our DM didn't say much. Dove in at first site at Manta Point and were not disappointed. We saw a free swimming Common Octopus on the descent, as well as blue spot rays. After about 5 minutes, our DM starting gesturing wildly and racing ahead. We swam after her and were greeted by a 12-15' Mola-mola! We had to hook in due to current, but we spent about 20 minutes with this huge fish before heading back toward the boat. On the way back, we also saw two 8-10' manta rays. This was our DM's first Mola-mola encounter as well.
The next two dives at Crystal Bay (normal Mola-mola site) and SD Point were not nearly as eventful, with no more big fish, but we still saw cool things: scorpion fish, giant frog fish, leaf fish, ribbon eel, hairy crabs, porcelain crabs and nudibranchs. We pointed as much out to the DM as she pointed out to us. After the dives, we went back to Sanur and Bali Scuba took care of transporting our gear from the boat to the shop, cleaning the gear and then transporting us and our gear back to the hotel. All in all, Bali Scuba runs a good dive operation and we had a good diving experience. The only negative experience we had all day involved the boat crew's smoking, but my wife and I are more sensitive and anti-smoking than most people. If you are in Bali or passing through on your way to Bima, I highly recommend giving Bali diving a try with Bali Scuba.
