Comments My first trip to Raja Ampat, expertly organized by Scuba Dive Asia (Onno Lenting). While the voyage to get there is still long, a daily direct flight from Jakarta makes it quite a bit easier.

The Amira dive boat is a Pindisi Schooner, a classic wood-built ship in Makassar, about 6-7 years ago. She is a beautiful boat with spacious cabins, a very large sun deck and purpose-built for diving. Plenty of space for photographers. Dive preparation area is well thought through. Trips to dive sites are by tenders, usually only a few minutes from the Amira. ENOS safety equipment is available for all divers. Food was varied and excellent. All around a well-run, first class operation (both hospitality and diving). Bruno Hopff is to be congratulated. I have seen otherwise, believe me. It is the little things that count – like the ginger tee or the pineapple juice you are offered when you step back on to the boat from the tender after a dive.

Now to the diving. 3-4 dives are usually offered daily (3 day/1 night) unless the boat is in transfer. The diving is, as expected, of great quality. Currents can be strong at times. Our route took us from Sorong to the Misool area in the south and then back north to the Dampier Straight and back to Sorong. A total of 10 days of diving with 34 dives. The variety both in terms of corals and marine life (small and big) is staggering. I am not even going to start describing all the stuff I saw. Divers are split into groups of 4-5, each with a dive master. The dive masters rotate among the dive groups. All are excellent in finding the stuff you would otherwise miss. A great bunch of guys. Visibility varied (lots of nutrients) but was generally good.

I am trying hard to find something to complain but fail. Go there, it is a trip you will not regret. The beauty underwater is matched by what you see above. At the end of the trip, I felt like expelled from paradise.
