Comments Alor has world class diving, with lots of variety--corals, muck and critters, and (at one site) sharks and other pelagics. And no crowds--just two land resorts, far apart, and a few liveaboards, so we always had the site to ourselves. They do two boat dives in the morning; in the afternoon divers are free to dive on the house reef on their own, which can be quite rewarding.

The corals are gorgeous and look healthy. The Christmas Tree worms were neat. Current Alley is the place for sharks and other pelagics--including some hammerheads on our second trip over there. But as the name implies, strong currents. I could have done with a reef hook for those dives but they weren't supplied. As it was, we just grabbed rocks at the top of the wall and watched the big guys come up.The muck diving was in a narrow channel off the main island. We had terrible visibility the day we went over there; apparently it's often much better.

The second week of my 8-day stay was a full-moon week and it seemed to have quite an effect on the currents. Really fierce at a site called Elalara, and then heavy surge on the next dive at Anemone City. But the resort does cater to beginners, keeping them clear of the more challenging sites.

There can be dramatic water temperature changes around Alor, which must be due to upwelling. We had it down to 23 on one dive, but I've heard it can go down to 20 at times.

Alor Divers and Eco resort is small (7 bungalows) and friendly, with an excellent French divemaster, James.
