Comments I booked a weeks diving with Alor Dive, with accomodation at the homestay Cantik in Kalabahi. Alor Diving is run by a German guy named Thomas, who has lived and dived on Alor for the past 13 years. Thomas does not say very much, but he does know the dive spots very well. His boat is locally built, with 120 hp inboard diesel and plenty of shade, and room for up to 14 divers. Thomas kept his word and although I was the only diver, we still went out every day except for one which was too windy. As his boat is moored at Kalabahi it takes at least one hour to get to Pantar strait where almost all the dive sites are. Thomas was the captain (as his normal man was indisposed) and another German also living on Alor was my guide / buddy. There are several small islands in the strait between Alor and Pantar, namely Pura, Nuhakepa, Ternate, and Bunyan, and with a strong current through the deep water straits, the dive sites are all close to the shores of the islands. The visibility was excellent, as were the corals (hard and soft), the topography interesting, mainly slopes and walls, the small reef life teeming, but a marked absence of larger fish, including pelagics and sharks. I only saw one school of larger fish (rainbow runners) This is presumably because of overfishing (even though the straits are supposed to be a special semi protected zone) which is the curse of much of Indonesia these days. All dives are double dives, and I got used to the long ride out and back (spent it looking at fish books). The on board lunch left something to be desired, and I ended up getting Thomas to buy some fruit in the market for me, and I took my own biscuits.
The homestay was fine, friendly Indonesians, with good fish, rice and vegetable meals.
Accomodation cost was $AUD250 for 8 nights, including meals, a Bintang a day, plus hire of a scooter.
Diving cost 12 dives over six days was $AUD650
