Comments The Lakshadweep Islands are a Northern extension of the Maldives and absolutely pristine, stunning talcum powder beaches, sparkling torquoise water. Only one operating resort on Bangaram Island, and it is exceptionally well run, food too. Moonlight dinners on the beach. Accommodations are delightful thatched roof cottages. Only three islands permit tourists and permits required to visit the islands (takes a couple of months to obtain but may be relaxed soon). Kadman Island has walls, we were supposed to spend two nights there but it was closed as they had no power. Benefit was that it eliminated a five hour boat ride that would have taken us into the evening and the sea was choppy. As it was boat ride from the airport at Aggati was two hours. Return ride was fantastic, calm, crystal clear water and we watched hundreds of turtles speed from the path of the approaching boat.

Diving was world class, plenty of fish, great viz and not much current. Highlight was a school of 21 spotted eagle rays, but there are turtles (3 species), lobster, tuna, jacks, lion fish, napoleon wrasse, sweetlips, eels, unicorn fish, anemone fish, reef and nurse sharks, parrots, angels, butterflys. Fish life surprisingly good since corals have not recover that much since El Nino.

The islands are small, stunningly beautiful with palm trees and fringing reef. Bangaram took less than an hour to walk around and there are lots of shorebirds. Some people come for the birdwatching, there is a lake that attracts migrants, or just to swim, snorkel or relax. Islands are 1 1/2 hour flight from Cochin and there may be luggage restrictions so most people rent BC and regulator, all new scubpro, but not cheep. Shortie wetsuit was ideal. I don't have particulars on cost but you can check it out on the web. Most guests British or European, a few Indians; very few Americans have visited.
