Anthony's Key is a beautiful place in a great location. It's close proximty to the dive sites was convenient and easy: no hanging on the boat. This all-inclusive resort had something for everyone, but there is lots of diving all day. I have been diving for 20 years, generally once or twice a year in the Caribbean, and my 16 year old son has been diving a year. We both were lucky to have Joel as our boat captain and Greg as our dive master for the whole week. Everyone on our boat got along extremely well and had varied experience levels. Joel and Greg managed to cater to all our needs and abilities. Their enthusiam, upbeat personalities, service and skills made everyone's trip a pure joy! They went out of their way to give us variety and thrills, whether it was going to the south side of the island or moving the boat to another site to get better vis or a fun drift dive. They were always looking for signs of a whale shark and would drive the boat out of the way to get us to see the big fish. Greg checked out my son's skill level and accurately determined he could handle doing all the dives with us, and all the while keeping an eye on him (and other newbies) and instructing him and me on many finer points. Joel was more than a captain, he loves diving and constantly talked about our dives. My son was immmersed in diving and learned a lot that week. It was a perfect place for a father and son dive trip!
The fish life was good not great: turtles, large groupers, snapper, etc. and shools of juveniles. We did not see a whale shark nor a seahorse. greg brought a bag of fish down on a number of dives and the fish would come at us . The hungry, large groupers were very aggressive. The vis was Ok as was the quality of the coral. The wrecks were very good and provided fun dives. One wreck was lying beside a large patch of garden eels......very cool! We dove 3 times a day with 2 night dives. Never did a shore dive because we had to rest sometime.
The rooms were very good, clean and comfortable and I am glad we chose the key over the hillside . The very short ferry ride is fun and the key was beautiful, especially with our northern Caribbean views. In April there was no need for A/C. The weather was perfect. The main structure on the hillside has the dining area situated for great views and breezes. The food was very good especially the fish and soups. Lots of variety and quantity for the breakfast and choice of meat or fish for lunch and dinner. The service from everyone was top notch. No complaints from anyone. You get the feeling all the guests were happy and tipped well, which keeps a positive cycle going.
The bugs were not that bad. we did use cactus juice (they sell plenty there). The excursions off the resort were good and close by: nature trail across the road; butterfly farm, and west end village. No need to rent a car, and no need to go to the east end of the island.lots of taxi's to take you to west end (close by) which is nice duirng the early evening and great for bar night life with live music. The beach picnic is nice and the canopy zip wire was ok. Probably would have been better just to hang at the beach than spend the time and money on the canopy tour. The nice white sandy beach is a short boat ride west of AKR. No real beach at the resort, although the small man-made beach on the ksy has a nice entrance to swim in the channel. We didn't swim or dive with the dolphins, but the folks that did loved it. You do see them all the time swimming and leaping about. They look very happy. The non-divers did not seem bored at all. Lots to do!
Even though i have heard the mainland can be dangerous, Roatan was safe and AKR was very safe. You can drink the water and eat the fruit etc. The people i met off the resort were nice and friendly. Joe- Boston area: joe@mercurypersonnel.com
