Comments Paya Bay Resort brought us by boat to Marble Hill Farms every morning at 8:30 am to meet the divers. Tropical Island Divers (Marik & crew) operate the dive operations from the dock. They have gear for rent for those who need it (I brought all my own gear) and offer various courses, etc. Most of the dives are on the fringing reef that runs along the north side of the Island and depths can be up to 100 ft. in places, although most dives are not that deep with most of the dives going through or into the reef. The divemasters were good and very helpful with gear, getting off and back onto the boat. I have issues with my back and the crew could not have been more helpful. They also were very good with my my camera assembly (I've had some bad experiences with boat crew handling my cameras) and offered help both climbing back aboard the boat (gear off) and getting back to my seat. If you're lucky, you might have the opportunity to go through the cut in the island to the south side (an extra fee might be required for fuel) for some different diving. The ride, while a little long, is very entertaining and beautiful and the diving on the south side is different and very interesting. A couple of years ago, we asked for a day on the south side and were forced (aww) to go a second time (no extra charge) due to weather and rough seas on the north side.

Most dives on the north side are on the outside of the reef (the crew is very skillful at knowing just where the passes through the reef are) and might end on either side of the reef, with the boat picking you up where you surface.

While there are not a lot of fish life here (you see fishermen heading out every day), I have seen several rays, moray eels (various types) and lots of corals, nudibranchs, sea horses (huge, in my experience), sponges, etc.

While I have seen more colourful diving (I dive the west coast of B.C., Canada every year), I keep going back for some very relaxing, enjoyable diving with a very good crew. I definitely recommend them if you're in the east end of Roatan. The resorts in the east end are also reportedly very good and you often have to book well ahead to find a vacancy. All in all, a good vacation and I'll be going back again.

UW Photo Comments I tend to be self-sufficient with my camera gear but found the boat crew to be very careful and considerate with my camera set-up and always placed it in a water bath on board the boat. I dis-assembled, cleaned and set up my own camera every night back in my room at the resort.
