Comments Like I said - I would like to say DON'T GO to Las Rocas. We had not been back to Honduras in a long time since Bay Island Beach Resort turned into a school and explored going to one of the large all inclusives but wanted to find someplace different and small - we found it! They have 16 bungalows and I think accommodate 26 people and have a wonderful location just down from West Bay; but a very, very private location. Mark and I upgraded our room so we would have a king-sized bed. Accommodations: very, very comfortable yet simple; wonderful AC, even had internet and TV but we never used those; also a mini frig. Easy walk to dive pier, shop and on-site restaurant. BTW - take your own beach towels. Food - amazing! We learned they have the best seafood restaurant on the island and the prices are great - you can do a meal plan which we did and regretted only because it was way too much food and most of my meals were wasted - sharing a plate would be ample. Breakfast is included. Take a 5 minute walk down the beach to the mini-mart to by gallons of drinkable water for $1.50 each - - it is not supplied. The faucet water has a mild odor so you know not to put it in your mouth (ie use fresh water to brush your teeth too!) Bar had every brand we needed but we took our own too. We never experienced any problems from the food or the ice cubes! The lettuce is grown on a hydroponic farm on the island - owned by a retired Texas A&M professor who started it as a hobby and now can't grow enough lettuce. When we visited the farm years ago, most of his crop was thrown away. (a bit of trivia). Now for the diving - WONDERFUL - everything; the shop, the boat, the group size the locations, visability and dive times - 3 a day starting at 9 am ending at 2:30 pm - such civilized times. The boat is small so you enter with a back roll but that was fine. I take my gear off to re-board any boat I dive from to save the wear and tear on my back. They put a fresh water bucket on the boat for Mark's camera rig. We had a D/M but he/she just led the way once they knew our experience level - most dives 1 hour. They don't have nitrox but can arrange for tanks if you want. A small but very, very efficient team. We went the end of April (off season) so most dives it was Mark, me and a diver from Canada we really liked - love those "private" dives. The price was like the old days - a dive package of 7 nights with two dives per day and breakfast. I think extra dives were $40 and Mark did 3/day and what he described as the best night dive he's had in years - can't remember the cost because our end bill was so reasonable. We seldom left the "resort" compound that has 24 hrs security BTW. We were not bothered by vendors unless we walked off of the Las Rocas private beach area. Roatan, if you don't know, is very, very poor. Bottom line - unless you just really like the big, busy all inclusive feel of Fantasy Island or Coco View - skip them and their high dollar price. We found the perfect, quaint "resort" that we had thought did not exist any longer that is very close to home. Also a tip for entry into Roatan which we learned after we spent 2 hrs in the immigration line -pre-register for entry on the Honduras immigration website - print the form and when you get to the terminal show your paperwork to one of the greeters - you then are directed to a special expedited line. AND on departure, be patient it's a mess leaving from the Roatan airport - the tourist trade has overwhelmed it. We will be going back. The only expensive part of the trip was the airfare - from DFW it was $1100/person - that's crazy. Las Rocas does airport transfers but after the long wait at immigration, Mark and I opted for a $30 cab ride to the resort rather than wait another hour for the other two people whose plane had just landed. By the time they got to the resort, we had two drinks and were in the soaking pool! I forgot to mention - the owners of Las Rocas are hands on, they are from Italy and it was best to call down there to make our reservations. They just recently have an on-line method for payment; like I said, this place is a small undiscovered jewel.
