Comments We flew on Taca, and I'm please to say the flight was on schedule and all our baggage arrived too!! We were picked up by the ILR staff and taken to the resort. We were met by the owners, Donna and Andy, and introduced to one of the DMs, Cher, and "Capt Ed" who really seems to run the place. He is the "go-to guy" for just about everything, and loves his job. We were also given the standard "sign your life away" paperwork, and given the "what to expect" briefing. One thing to note is that they recommended I sign up for the 2 dollar a day "medical insurance" for each of us. Covers any cost of doc visit, including chamber etc. The only thing it didn't cover was drugs, if they were required. Well, I have DAN for the whole family and thought I probably didn't need it, but it was explained that the money went towards helping to care for all the young lobster divers who tend to get bent over there. Well, I don't have any problem donating to the cause, so I signed us up. (Little did I know at the time that I would need this later.)

Okay so we got settled in our room, a queen and 2 single beds, air conditioned; very comfortable. Then it was time for dinner, and I'm happy to report the food is excellent. It is not a buffet; it is a three-course meal already planned and posted on a bulletin board. So if someone has a problem with the menu, they can request something else. There was always plenty and you just had to ask for more. (which I did) Additionally, if anyone has any nutrition requirements they will try to accommodate that as well.

The next morning, we loaded and set up our gear on the boat for the first dive, and that was the last time we had to do anything with our gear. From that point on, the DM and boat crew changed tanks, unloaded our gear at the end of the diving day, rinsed it all out, hung it to dry, and then loaded it up the next morning. Very cool-- and they did an excellent job. One more thing to note: That same morning the other DM Monica was going to lead the dives. She had not met us, and wanted to see our C-cards. (I thought this a good thing, and thought to myself, "Wow, very professional here.") Although both DMs were very professional, Cher appeared to really enjoy her job, and took interest in everyone and what they wanted to do. Monica on the other hand, just seemed to go through the motions. She just didn't seem into the whole thing, and if she set up your gear, you'd better take a look. (I do that anyway, but never found anything wrong when Cher was setting up the gear.) Again, everything about this operation was very professional and I was very comfortable with my daughters diving there.

Breakfast was at 7:00, (okay for the non divers it was between 7:00 and 9:00) on the boat by 8:00 and usually in the water at 8:15 or slightly after. We were back by 9:30 and then back on the boat at 10:30. Then back for lunch by 12:00. The afternoon dive was at 2:30pm, and then dinner was at 7:00pm. I think the longest boat ride was 25 minutes. We did have an option one day to make the hour ride to the other side of the island to dive "Mary's Place" but the weather did not cooperate. As for the boats, they are long and covered. There is plenty of room for lots of divers. We had no more than 16 while we were there, and still plenty of room. There are two fresh water tanks one is dedicated for camera gear only.

A side note: On the fifth day of diving my oldest woke up with a bad ear ache. We decided she should skip the diving and see how things progressed, and if things were not better we would go see the doc. Well, after our 3rd dive she was ready to go see the doc. The resort took us to AKR to see the doc right there with the chamber, and he said she had a ear infection but that her eardrum looked fine. He gave her some drops to take for 5 days, but said that she should be fine for diving the next morning. Cost... 10 bucks.. Remember that insurance I mentioned, great stuff.. (and she did resume diving the following day).
On the last day we decided to take the rainforest canopy tour. If you haven't done it, you are missing out. The girls and I had a blast!
All in all, the diving is great. We met some great folks, both divers and resort staff. Will we go again? Count on it.
