Comments If you are looking for the perfect dive operation, look no further than Dockside Dive Center at CoCo View Resort in Roatan. Dive boats are roomy and comfortable, have 3 exits for divers, shade for those who can't take the sun, 2 ladders at the stern and one in the middle of the dive boat if the water is choppy, and at least one dive guide( Marcos) in the water who moves slow enough that divers can take pictures without being rushed. Dockside facilities are excellent with each dive boat having its own locker room, drying area, rinse tanks for wetsuits, a separate tank for regulators and a third rinse tank for cameras. The one negative, bring bug spray( Sawyer Premium Insect Repellent 20 percent Picaridin will work) for the sand flea, who will get you as soon as you leave the dive boat or walk anywhere around the resort.
The CoCo View Cabanas over the water are airconditioned( the temperature outside never went below 90 degrees) and nicely furnished with porches over the water. However the bar( happy hour from 5 to6:30 PM) and dining room are not airconditioned and were very hot even with ceiling fans. For some a negative, for others a positive, TV does not exist. Breakfasts were excellent with eggs to order at two grills. Lunch and dinner varied with plenty of chicken. The quality of food available at lunch and dinner varied( certainly not gourmet), but was always edible and filling.
Finally the reefs. CoCo View has its own house reefs(3) which are available 24/7 with a unique system of chain and buoys pto get you there. The Prince Albert wreck is worth diving, but the CoCo View Wall and Newman's Wall were not much to see during daylight. Not being a night diver, I can only say that many divers found the house reefs worth diving at night. On the whole, the reefs around Roatan suffer from the same problems as the rest of the Caribbean. Hard coral is dying and soft coral consists of sea plumes and fans and tube sponges. Any edible fish are missing , since people have to eat in order to survive. One turtle and one anemone were seen. Three lion fish , one spotted eagle ray, and two sea horses made the trip worthwhile.
CoCo View Resort prides itself( CoCo Nuts) on having divers return year after year to what can only be described as a loving , homey atmosphere. Let me end in mentioning that this is the only Resort I have ever visited where the manager met you when you arrived and wished you well when you departed. A very nice, sincere touch.
