Comments BAY ISLANDS BEACH RESORT, ROATAN

Five divers arrived on the late afternoon Catamaran ferry from La Ceiba and were met at the terminal by Tyrone to be delivered to the resort by van.
Upon reaching the resort, we were introduced to the owners, Cam & Ted and assigned our rooms in the Casa Blanca building. With five divers in our group, we were given the three rooms off the main room upstairs. After settling in, we proceeded to the beach front bar and restaurant for a prepared dinner. All breakfasts, lunches and dinners were mainly prepared in the kitchen located in the Casa Blanca building and carried to the beachfront location for serving to the patrons. Breakfast consisted of many items that could be cooked on location and served after making your choice from the menu, the same for lunch. The dinner menu had a few items to order for those patrons that might stop by for a meal. The meal that came with the room was a prix fix meal, starting with soup, salad entrée and desert.
There was a full bar available and exotic drinks were there for the asking. Our group had purchased some wine in La Ceiba and brought it along, and they did not charge us a corkage fee.
Thursday night is the weekly pig roast and crab race. The pig is barbequed for 8 hours and basted until the meat literally falls off the bone. I had an outside piece that was delicious. The crab races followed just after tequila shots were passed around. To keep with tradition, the winners’ share of the pot was donated to the local school program, a very good cause. A local band played and fun was had by all.
I must say that the owners are involved with this resort. They gave informational lectures about the Bay Islands and the activities that are available, from Shark diving, zip line canopy adventures to other activities. They are Americans that came to Roatan and purchased the resort and have consistently made improvements through out their tenure. The employees appear to enjoy their work at this resort. You always saw someone doing something constructive either raking leaves, sweeping the walks or generally keeping the area clean.
The head dive master explained what was about to happen for the next week and he checked our c-cards. The next item was to load the boats, our equipment was taken to the boats and we placed our gear on the tanks. If you wanted to, that would be the last time you touched it, but at the end of the two tank morning and one tank afternoon dives the gear was removed from the boats and washed. You would either hang it up in the large ventilated room or if you wanted to, take some back to your own room.
There was a little chop on a couple of days, the rest of the week was perfect weather.
We took their advice, as did the other 14 divers in the resort, and signed up for a afternoon shark dive. We were driven by the two vans with our gear across the island and taken out to a reef to line up and watch them feed the 12 or so sharks. After about 25 minutes we returned to the large panga and returned to the shark dive company headquarters and watched a video of the encounter. Only downside was that the company that operated the shark dive wanted $75 for the DVD, had the price been $25 a lot of people would have made the purchase.
Prior to the day of our departure, the staff went to the airport, checked us in and returned with boarding passes. On departure day we were driven to the airport by Ted, the owner, and walked through the different stations to the final security checkpoint. You don’t see that to often.
