Comments A dozen divers went to Bay Island Beach Resort (BIBR) in June. I was the group leader. The diving was great, and their meet and return to the airport was super. BIBR really has their act together to make the airport transition smooth. The rooms were exactly as portrayed on their website. However, other areas were not the case.
BIBR website (until right after we came back from our trip) claimed great food, a great menu, with a selection of entrees for dinner and even lobster one night. Instead, there was a buffet that served same food every morning, every lunch, and limited offerings for dinner - and no sign of any lobster. I understand the need to keep prices down, and I have no problem with buffets, but was expecting a selection for dinner. Roatan runs on “ish” time. Noon lunch was usually late. This is not good when you return hungry from the morning dives. The staff was to bring your food to you after you ordered. It took up to 30 minutes to get your hotdog or hamburger, and often your order was given to someone else who came and stood waiting at the serving counter.
Another group at BIBR wanted to arrange a charter ($300/boat) to a special dive site and asked our group to join them. Our group did, but in the end, the folks that asked us to join cancelled at the last minute, so we ended up incurring all of the cost. We did not know of the cancellation until the boats left the dock. The owners would not even consider discussing this with us. I spoke to the office manager when we returned. She said to talk to the dive shop manager. The dive shop manager said he would talk to Ted, one of the owners. I never heard back from either individual. When we checked out, I asked again about the trip to the other side of the island. I still got no response. When we were at the airport I talked to Cam, another owner. She said that Ted told her that since it was our group that went, we could work it out among ourselves. There was no cancellation policy.
We were told we could charge the dive tips to the room, but that was not the case. That left some folks short on cash.
The owners were not willing to talk to me about my concers and did little to resolve customer inquiries. In fact when I spoke to my dive travel agent, she corresponded with BIBR. The return comment was less than satisfactory. My travel agent was basically told that we were wrong, and were a difficult, demanding group.
