Comments We had a great time at Barefoot Cay Resort. Our party of four arrived on Dec 29 to a sold-out resort, but you wouldn’t know it. Not once did we have any problems finding a chair by the pool or a table for dinner. The resort staff were beyond friendly and were so sweet. Our loft over the diveshop was excellent, spacious, and had a great view. It had a fully kitted kitchen which would have been perfect for those not choosing the all-inclusive option. The bed was too soft for my husband’s taste, but everything else was great. Our friends had a couple complaints about their room which were promptly taken care of.

The grounds were also very nice and well cared for. Barefoot has a thorough program for treating sand fleas, but I must be tasty because I still got tagged on a regular basis when I forgot my bug spray. Food was generally excellent and my allergy was accommodated.

Barefoot Divers was located on site right below our loft, so it was super convenient. The boats are docked right there, and the facilities are great. You get your own private locker, and most of your gear is set up and cleaned by the dive staff. Hot showers and toilets are located in the dive locker room. The rental gear was in excellent condition. The weather was fairly windy during our stay and the waves were big, which meant that several dives were challenging/dangerous in terms of getting on and off the boat and the choice of dive sites was more limited.

Although the dive operation had many positives, they seem to be in transition. One of the two main boats was inoperable for much of our stay, and way too many divers were on the boat (more divers than gear stations). The dive staff on the whole is quite new and could use some seasoning and mentoring. For example, over the course of a 15 dive week, only one divemaster drew a map as part of the dive briefing. Scheduling the staff seemed to be a source of confusion. There was little interaction with staff between dives, and my friend commented that they seemed more interested in their conversations with each other than with us. That said, we dove several time with Jenna, who we really liked and who we know will grow into a great divemaster with a bit more time and mentoring. Luc was excellent and I hope the junior staff look to him for guidance!

In terms of the diving, the first couple days were so-so due to rough weather, but after that we really enjoyed the diving. Our best dives were the last two days when we travelled to the West End, where the vis was excellent and sitings included many groupers, turtles, eels, and of course many beautiful fish and coral! On another dive I saw my first free swimming Spanish Dancer which was interesting for me, as well as some of my favourites (seahorses, flounders, jawfish, and drumfish). Free swimming morays were a frequent occurrence (so frequent that I stopped filming them when another one came along)

Three boat dives are available each day. We did one night dive. My friend snorkeled in the house reef, but wasn’t too jazzed. After the first couple days, the staff had a good idea of everyone’s capabilities, so we were generally grouped with other similarly-experienced divers which was nice. All but one dive was a drift dive. On most dives we were required to surface once the first person started running low on air, meaning that we often surfaced with 1000 -1300 PSI.

All in all, we enjoyed our trip to this beautiful resort and diving in Honduras.
