Comments Instructors/Divemasters: Cathy and Bob are very experienced, helpful and friendly. They are great at finding the hard to find fish and critters you want to see like pipefish, frogfish, leaf scorpionfish, etc. And they’re photographers too so will do all they can to make your trip the best. Just tell you what you want to see and if it possible, they will show you what you ask for.

Boat: 30 foot boat with twin outboards. It has a great ladder – it’s not easy to smash your fingers in this one. The boat is that it is limited to a maximum of six divers (customers) plus crew. There is plenty of room for six divers but the owner and captain (Steve Frisbie) will take the boat out with as few as two divers. We have been diving with Wanna Dive on five separate trips and their boat is rarely full except over peak seasons like Christmas and sometimes in the summer. This boat is plenty big enough for the Kona coast where the waters are fairly protected, especially compared to Maui and the other Hawaiian islands. But the best thing about a six-passenger boat is that you don’t have a lot of other divers in the water spooking the fish and Wanna Dive allows you to dive your own profile based on your skill level and air consumption. On this last trip, our dives lasted an average of 1 hour, 13 minutes each (with several at 1 ½ hours). Nice!

Dive Locations: The Kona Coast is our favorite Hawaii Dive location – the Kona coast has more interesting topography and more coral than Kauai or Maui. And the sheltered seas mean that you don’t have to meet at 6:30 (like on Maui) to beat the wind – and you don’t need a large boat carrying 12 or more divers. We usually met our boat at the Honokohau Harbor about 9 a.m. which allows for a leisurely breakfast (who wants to rush on vacation?)

We can highly recommend Wanna Dive for all dive levels, especially as long as Cathy and Bob are there. They’re great for beginners and advanced divers. Enjoy!
