Comments Kona-Honu Divers was an excellent operation. Large boat, well maintained, limited number of divers. (It was off season) Divers are segregated into groups based upon experience. My wife (100+ dives) and I dove with most experienced group, loosely led by local dive leader, and were afforded "first in last out" good bottom time on dives (most at or over an hour). Manta Ray night dive surpassed all expectations- 10 mantas on sight at one time, lagest at about 16 feet across. Multiple boats and divers (40) at manta dive did not detract in the least from this unique and "must do" dive. All crew and captains (and we dived with several over 4 days) were competent and courteous. My wife had her 100th dive on one trip, and Konu-Honu had taken time to make her up a little certificate commemorating the event, a nice touch. Briefings were through without being ponderous, and conditions were absolutely perfect. November is a great time of year to dive the Kona Coast. Hotel and air fares are down in the off season, no big crowds, and water temperature is good. Don't expect to see turtles on every dive or as abunmdantly as in Maui, but they are here.
Shore diving was excellent, (we did 3 shore dives) but entry and exit in most locations involves either a dicey rock and coral entry or a long walk (hundreds of yards) in full gear. "Easy sites" like Place of Refuge get crowded early. If you go there, arrive before 0830 or come another day.
Manta Ray Night dive is a must do - it cannot be overrated. Those who complain of the "passive observer" aspect of this dive must have hit it on an offnight. Mantas come within inches, seem to have correographed their elegant feeding ballet, and the visual experience is, literally, indescribable. My wife and I believe we would do a return trip even if only to do this one dive.
