Comments All good. This was a short trip to Hawaii planned last minute and all the big companies in Kona (farther south) were booked. Luckily Blue Wilderness had a few spots and, even better, operated closest to where we were staying. The daily package was two a.m. boat dives. I suppose one could dive the afternoon, but the vis decreased significantly by then.
They were very accomodating to my companion whe was completing his OW advanced certification with them. They were SUPER accomodating to me when I arrived at the boat and realized I had grabbed the wrong air 2 for the trip. I expected to not be able to dive, but they switched out the parts from a spare rig like a pit crew, and didn't bat an eye about it. Very kind of them. In addition to the captain's McGiver skills, I was much impressed with the knowledge and skill of the dive masters.
Because the boat was small with no over-head covering for the divers, I was initially concerned about sun exposure (I don't use sun block for environmental reasons), but the boat was fast, the dive sites were close and we spent most of the time in the water. No problem.
Hawaii diving, it is said, is not what some folk consider spectacular - whatever that means. it's a young, volcanic island with fewer colorful soft corals than a lot of places, but still plenty of healthy hard corals, interesting formations, reef fish, moray, turtles, and the thrilling songs of whales throughout every dives. It was enough to keep me busy and happy just observing reef life for our three days of diving. Between dive sites there was whale watching. Sadly, we missed the manta night dive because of a scheduling misunderstanding. Blue Wilderness is a well-run little operation. I would dive with them again but would request more variety if diving a full week, the dive sites were fairly similar.
