Comments I chose Big Island divers because they were willing to give a discount for multiple days booked with them. We did 3 days of two tank dives, two manta Ray dives, and a backwater dive.
Let's start with what I didn't like: we chartered a 3 tank long range trip when I booked over 6 weeks out. When we checked in at the shop in Kona we were told that they didn't have the staffing to support the long range dive day. That was disappointing because I had heard that diving Three Rooms was quite a treat to the south of the typical sites. We were told to be at the marina at 8:30 each morning. Being respectful, we showed up about 15 minutes early, at 8:15. Turns out that we beat the boat to the marina. We finally boarded and left the harbor at around 9:10 or so. My gear was assembled incorrectly and their was no nitrox log on board. We brought our own analyzers and corrected the assembly. Our dive master was relatively new, finding a few critters and got us back to the boat. She started the first dive with us swimming down current and fighting it on the way back.
Here's what we DID like: they let us dive our tanks down to 500 psi, not pulling us out after 45 mins. While Our Dm might have been new she was friendly and enthusiastic. There were dry towels waiting for us when we surfaced and a cooler full of drinks and water. Half sandwiches were served on the surface interval and snacks consisted of pretzels and popcorn. After the first morning an analyzer was present and gear was assembled correctly. Tardiness on their part was still an issue since we were typically the last boat at a site.
The manta Ray dive was really cool but the highlight for me was the blackwater dive which was epic. Suspended on a 40 ft tether in 5000 ft of water to watch the small stuff drift by was unique. This is a must-do dive for those that can handle a little pucker factor in the beginning of the dive.
The last day we dove Ripoff Reef right outside the marina and swam with 50+ dolphins.
Overall I would consider diving with Big Island Divers again if Kona Honu or Dive Makai were full again.
