Comments We were a group of 14 who got stuck in Guam because of Typhoon Maysak which prevented us from getting into Truk.As we had some time to kill before somehow getting a flight back, we decided to dive with MDA who are supposed to be the largest and best operators in Guam.
They did send across a bus to pick us up from our hotel ( Guam Reef & Olive Spa Resort which was quite excellent) to take us to their dive shop and then on to their boat. Their dive shop for sure is well stocked and the staff are courteous and well informed.
Their boat is small and cramped. Although they picked us up in the morning for a two-tank diving day, no fruits or breakfast was provided! This is inspite of them charging USD 125 per head per day for 2 dives! My certification cards were not checked and neither did I complete any paperwork ( excepting paying their bill and getting a receipt). This was a shocker.
What then turned out to be the worst dive experience for me was that on a particular day, the crew caught a sailfish ( on their fixed reels)and before anyone of us could react, ( note the fish was reeled in near the dive jump off area at the rear), they battered it with lead weights and killed it most brutally! We were speechless at this barbaric act and when we voiced our disgust by which time it was too late to save the fish, they made a lame apology. The blood and gore was hosed off.
Now Guam is overfished. If the dive crew prefers to slaughter a sailfish rather than take divers down to admire its beauty, then there is something seriously wrong with this operator's mentality.
I stopped diving with them although I still had a few days in Guam.
PADI needs to pull up such operators as it goes against the basic principles of diving which all of us so passionately love.
