Comments My wife and I had been to this resort in 2019 (see review) and loved everything about the resort and the diving. This time was no where near as good. For starters the Newton is down for a lengthy engine replacement. The resort rented and OLD sightseeing boat to use in the interim. Totally not suited for diving. No tank racks, poor ladder and entry platform, slow (like top speed 10 knots) and smoke fumes that gave you a headache by the time you go to the dock. The boat had a funky entrance in the bow. You walked in from the beach and if the seas are higher than 2-3 feet they have to bus you to the port about 20 minutes away.
The boat on most days had 20-25 divers on it. The first dive of the morning was at 8 am this was a deeper dive for more experienced divers. Usually less people on this dive. The second was shallower and was usually more crowded. The afternoon dive was for students essentially.
Groups were made up of 5-8 divers and the DM. Our divemaster for the week was Travis who did a great job keeping the group together and leading. No long dives. Dives ended at around 45-50 minutes or when the first diver in group hit 1,000 psi. Most dives were drift dives.
The diving was good. Visibility was not great due to heavy rains the week we were there 30-40 feet. Lots of great and healthy coral, reef fish and critters.
The attitude of the operation has definitely suffered. The best way I can describe most of the dive staff is friendly(ish) but not very helpful or enthusiastic.
We go to Sandals resorts for the diving. Not a great experience this time around.
