Comments First, be aware that there seems to be problems with several dive boats in this part of the world. The original dive boat we had paid for (Buddy Dive) lost their license a few months prior to the trip. Thank goodness for Vickie Coker at Travel Masters in Austin, Texas! She was on top of this all the way; she found us an alternative on the Galapagos Sky, arranged for the money to be transferred to the new boat, handled paperwork, etc. We look forward to working with her again for our next dive trip. Other people on our trip had been scheduled to be on the Aggressor, which was cancelled on short notice. Stay vigilant.
The diving was phenomenal: once you get to the northern islands of Darwin and Wolf it's a parade of hammerheads, Galapagos sharks, Silkies, eagle rays, etc. We saw whale sharks on 4 dives at close range. It's good to be experienced and comfortable with cold water, strong currents, and choppy surface. It was a lot of fun to hang in the blue at the end of many dives and see tuna, wahoo. One buddy pair saw a tiger shark during their safety stop which apparently is an unusual occurrence. The dive briefings were painfully long and confusing, but the divemasters were superb under the water. They new where to go, when to look for everything from mola mola to sea horses, and did a great job balancing safety and fun.
We were very glad that after disembarking the Sky we stayed on to see spectacular wildlife and scenery of the Galapagos Islands via the more traditional tourist mechanisms (hotels and a boat called the Beagle). If at all possible to extend your stay, do so!

Are there restrictions as to how many dives you can do from the government ?
By report author: Robert and Laura Mosqueda in CA, US at Aug 10, 2014 17:09 EST
The gov't does have some restrictions, but the limitations are mostly due to the logistics and conditions: long navigations, cold and choppy water, etc. We were allowed to do 1 night dive at Darwin so on that day there were 4 dives; most days we had 3 dives and they were each about 50-60 minutes long. The government does restrict land excursions such that we were only allowed 2 visits which took place on the first and last days.
