Comments This trip was one headache after another. The three of us found out on our own that Peter Hughes (PH) had sold the company. With a lot of effort, we got a refund and went with PH’s Galapagos Sky, rather than his previous company. We reserved almost a year in advance. With two weeks to go we still had not heard about our promised hotel reservation, even though we reminded them at least five times. A couple of times she apologized and promised once again to take care of it. For the entire last two weeks before our departure date we could not get in contact with anyone by email or telephone, despite leaving many messages. Since we had to make our own hotel reservations, we feared that they would not be able to contact us about our airline reservations. In the brochure it said that they were supposed to leave information about the local airline arrangement at our hotel. The airlines had no record of us. We decided not to go, two days before our departure date. Then we finally heard from the saleswoman. She assured us that everything was fine. So we decided to go, only to hear the next day that the boat would not be available. The day before we were supposed to leave they said that they would refund our money or give us an alternative week. They said that the boat was in dry dock for routine maintenance and had been delayed because they were working on another boat. We went the following week. We received some financial compensation for the airline rescheduling. However, we were not given the rooms that we had booked a year in advance. The boat felt like it was still in dry dock. Throughout the week, they painted the boat while we were on the deck. The refrigerator was turned on a day after we arrived. So it was a while before they could use it. I was stung by a wasp. The staff couldn’t have cared less. There was no ice available to apply to the sting. They never informed anyone of boat’s safety rules and procedures. Most important, the compressor did not work. They had to use the back up “mini compressor.” They had promise free Nitrox, but they had none. While using the back up, they filled up the tanks with the intake right next to the exhaust of the boat. We had to demand that they empty the tanks and fill them again. It wasn’t that difficult to move the compressor or run a hose. It was just thoughtlessness. For many incidents throughout the trip I am very thankful for the very experienced other divers on the boat who caught some very dangerous mistakes by the boat staff. None of the staff followed up about anything. They were not accommodating. The good news was that we had a terrific international group of highly experienced, intelligent, considerate and interesting divers on the boat. The dive masters did not talk to anyone let allow tell us anything about the wildlife. To me this is the worst offense on a dive trip, especially in the Galapagos. The dive master pointed out one seahorse. It was more than a language problem. They also had no personality. The dives sites were poor planned. The first day our only contact with the water was a check out dive with no visibility. This was totally a non event that frustrated everyone. We repeated several of the same dive sites for no understandable reason. The staff was evasive and untruthful about the plans of our dives. Fortunately, the divers were very demanding, which had some effect on the captain of the boat. The food was actually pretty good.
