Comments Galapagos Sky is not the cheapest way to dive in the Galapagos, but as one of the few liveaboards to visit the outer islands of Wolf and Darwin, it is a good choice for the well-heeled advanced diver. This is bucket list diving at one of the last pristine environments on earth where the combination of currents and remote location offers a combination of ocean voyeurism for large pelagics and schooling fish that is hard to beat. The boat itself is first class with decent size bunks and private bathrooms available. The divemasters are friendly and knowledgeable locals that know their science and history of the islands. The captain and crew were all very friendly and accommodating, including lots of time on the bridge discussing the seamanship and history of the islands. We were lucky to only have 10 divers on the trip in two groups of 5.

It is important to select the time of year that will facilitate the type of diving you wish to do and what you want to see. Our trip in early May was supposed to be in the transition season before the Humboldt current dominates with its plankton laden water and the “garua” marine overcast clouding the sky, but it came early in 2022 that week which reduced visibilities to sometimes less that 20 feet at the outer islands which is less than ideal for watching schooling trevally or hammerheads. With that said, multiple hammerheads were seen on nearly every dive, along with numerous turtles, sea lions, and nurseries of tropical fish, and other sharks including Galapagos and Tiger sharks. We also saw a mammoth whale shark reaching 30 feet in length. Of course, watching Iguana lizards feed underwater can’t be seen anywhere else in the world. Another highlight was getting completing engulfed by schooling sardines that changed day to night which then opened into a giant glittering silver skylight tube that we made with our bubbles as they coursed around the group. These memories have been added to my scuba “happy time” thoughts that fill my soul and make this adventure well worth the money.
