Comments We arrived in Taveuni about six weeks after Cyclone Tomas. There was a lot of damage to the hard coral in shallow water at the top of the reef. However, once deeper than 15 or 20 feet, the hard and soft coral was in excellent condition and looked to be unaffected by the storm. Fish life was abundant. It was nice to dive in a place that doesn’t give the impression of being over fished. On all dives there were thousands of gold and purple anthias swirling about the reef feeding on plankton in the currents. We also saw schools of blue fusiliers, schools of barracuda and yellow tail barracuda, and schools of tuna and trevally. On most dives, white tip reef sharks were seen and 3 or 4 dives had large Spanish mackerel and grey reef sharks. Closer to the reef, there were lots of tropical fish, anemone fish, and I saw about a dozen blue ribbon eels.

I stayed at Nakia Resort and used the on site operator, Taveuni Ocean Sports. Nakia Resort consists of a house for the owners who live on site and run the resort, 4 bures for guests, a swimming pool and excellent restaurant. The bures are only a couple of years old, spacious, very clean, and the beds are comfortable. There isn’t AC, but this wasn’t a problem in the dry season. The restaurant serves fresh fish, good steaks, and salads and vegetables picked from the gardens on site. Every night there are different deserts, which were just baked. Nakia also has a driver for their guests and he is used for arranged trips to coastal walks, waterslides, and other activities. There weren’t any “Fiji Time” type issues with service. The staff is very friendly and service is fast and efficient.

The onsite dive op, Taveuni Ocean Sports, has a well maintained, fast, catamaran dive boat with dual 4-cycle outboards so there was little noise and no fumes. There may only be 1 boat, but there aren’t any crowds since the resort is so small. I was the only diver for the first 3 days. This wasn’t a problem and they happily took me out alone to the rainbow reef dive sites where I was able to dive as long as I wished without any time restrictions. On the last 2 days, there were 5 divers on the boat and we were split up into 2 groups according to our experience. They limit 8 divers on the boat and never more than 4 divers to a group. There was a lot of current on the Rainbow reef so all dives were drift dives where you follow the dive masters. The dive masters, Julie and Aaron, are also the owners. They are avid divers, as excited to go diving as the guests, and work hard underwater to point out interesting and unusual marine life. There’s plenty of drinking water on board and snacks of fresh baked breads and cakes are offered. After handing them my gear on the first day, setting up of equipment and rising after dives was taken care of for me. Taveuni Ocean Sports was a professional dive op that treated experienced divers like….. Experienced divers. If I return to Taveuni, I would definitely stay at Nakia Resort again and dive with Taveuni Ocean Sports.
