Comments We stayed at The Remote Resort (TRR) which is on a peninsula of Vanua Levu and can only be reached by boat, usually via Taveuni Island. There are now 6 bures, one with 2 bedrooms where we stayed with friends; two more bures are under construction. The bures are of a couple different styles and quixotic. A friendly and efficient staff takes good care of you. The chefs are fantastic and the meals are very well prepared, in addition you can have your meal where you wish: main restaurant, beach (enjoyed listening to the sea), your bure, or the jetty (enjoyed watching the fish at night between courses). They have kayaks on their beach and many different activities/outings through the week, the majority of which are included in the resort package rate. Alcohol is not included with the meals, but wine and beer were available at very reasonable prices. Most of the guests are honeymooners, but they are seeing a steady stream of divers.

We dove with Taveuni Ocean Sports (TOS) based at Nakia Resort on Taveuni. To save time, we would leave TRR to meet the TOS boat on the reef, transferring between boats on the water both coming and going. The boat rides were about 20 minutes each way and this system worked fine. TOS also washed and kept our gear between dive days. Julie is the operations manager and her and an able crew run the dive operation. We used 2 different boats and both were fast, shaded, and comfortable and carried a first aid kit and oxygen. The divemasters and boat captains we had were professional and gave thorough dive briefings. They knew when and in what direction the currents would be moving, explaining how the current would change thru the dive, and whether we would go around the end of, or over the top of, a particular reef to move to the other side as we approached the end of the dive and where we would carry out the safety stop. During the hour long surface intervals, our divemaster provide a very informative briefing of reef ecology and typical marine species that will be encountered in the water while we munched on fresh fruit and sweet breads and drank hibiscus tea. Mid-trip I damaged my personal second stage which required new parts to fix, but which TOS was able to repair overnight such that I could keep using it; they charged me nothing for this service.

We did two dives a day for five days. There were many types of colorful hard and soft corals, the latter quite prolific. There were fish species with new and wilder colors and patterns, giant clams, several species of nudibranchs and garden eels, a few octopus, turtles, painted lobsters, and many schools of fish devouring the tiny organisms carried in by the currents. White-tip sharks and Napoleon Wrasse were regulars on most dives. The visibility was good to great. One of the divers took a day off and snorkeled from the diveboat and was amazed at the health of the coral and the variety of the fish she saw in 5-15 feet of water about 100 feet from the dive spot. The Somosomo Strait is known for strong currents, although we experienced only medium currents, having good buoyancy control before diving here allows you to enjoy the diving.
