Comments This was my ninth trip to Fiji aboard the Nai'a. I learned that something was up when we boarded the boat and were told that we would not be doing the usual checkout dive near Latoka, but would immediately steam across Fiji to dive Namena the next morning. Turns out Cyclone Pam was forming north of Vanuatu and the itinerary for our trip was uncertain. We got in four days of diving wonderful, familiar sites before the storm forced us to seek shelter in protected bays on the east side of Viti Levu, Fiji's biggest island. Captain Jonathan kept us informed and passed around weather advisories twice a day. The storm ended up sparing Fiji, though people were killed in Vanuatu. As a fish geek it was interesting to get into some different habitats, but the diving was very hit or miss. We found interesting small reefs in some of the bays, and others just had silt and poor visibility. We did venture out to the southern end of Vatu-i-ra a few times, and while conditions were fine underwater, it was dangerous getting in and out of the skiffs with heavy chop, so they didn't want to do much of that. The crew did an amazing job given the situation and found us placed to dive where the boat had never been before. I never felt unsafe. They clearly were informed and had contingency plans. It wasn't the best introduction to Fiji for the three in our group who had never been before, but I think we all enjoyed it.

UW Photo Comments The Nai'a has the best camera rooms I have encountered on a liveaboard. Plenty of work space and electric outlets very close to the dive deck, with two large rinse tanks too.
