Comments Awesome experience. I have never seen as much live coral and tropical fish as I did in Fiji. We were fortunate that the weather cooperated for us to get to what is termed the Bligh Waters. There we would dive the edges of what appeared to be a hundred acres or so of pristine coral reef, Charybolis Reef, coming to within a few feet of the surface of the ocean absolutely swarming with tropical fish and lush corals of every type and description. I have seen a lot of diving in my thirty years of it and I have never seen anything to compare. It was indescribable. I am sure this was the norm for regular Pacific divers but except for pass diving on the Tahiti Agressor and our week with the Whale Sharks in Cocos, this was my only Pacific experience. We did one day of diving nearer shore and it was very nice too. The vis was not as good as the Bligh Waters.

Wananavu Resort is a beautiful, well maintained tropical resort strung out along a hillside overlooking the Pacific. Rooms were duplexes made of local woods. There were three types, Oceanview, Gardenview and Beachfront. I would choose the Oceanview over the Beachfront.

The staff of the hotel and of the dive operation were very friendly, learned out names and catered to our every need. One of our divers got disoriented and the dive guide gently brought him up and back to the boat with no drama. My perception is that the resort is owned by non-Fijians. I know the diver operation is owned by an American. One curious aspect of the Fijian culture is the advise not to tip the Fijians. It seems patronizing to take the position that foreign business owners should be the caretakers of the local economy. ALL of the staff of the resort and the dive operations went well out of their way to make our experience special and our small group left a sizable donation to what is termed their "Christmas Fund". I regret not just distributing it to the staff individually.

Wananavu Resort and Kai Viti Divers would be a good choice for a great dive vacation.

UW Photo Comments There was just a rinse bucket on the boat but using digital these days is different from the film days. All you really need is a bucket to keep the camera wet until you get back to the resort.
