Comments Dominica is a very beautiful island, lush and mountainous, a fact that you will be very much aware of as you drive or are driven to your accommodations. We stayed at Fort Young hotel which is nice enough. Clean with a/c ,TV, and phones, drinkable tap water. Nice courtyard bar with very good rum punches and friendly barman. Their resturant was alright, but if you come in a big group, split up into smaller groups for dining to get faster service. . Breakfast at the fort was in our package, and was an excellent buffet style, served out on their wonderful veranda upstairs with ocean and town views as well. Most of our group sampled different resaurants all around town, It's my recommndation that you do the same, for there were quite a number of interesting and tasty places from low dollar up...
The dive operation left a lot to be desired. Let me say first that the dive guides, Reggie, and Jeff, and captain Gus were wonderfully friendly and enjoyable, and when underwater the guides were fine...but on board there was no service. They did not put gear together or change over tanks after first dives. There were NO drinks ( except water in a large igloo) nor snacks of any kind offered, though we were out on the boat for two dives with the suface interval as well. The first day the head reeked worse than an overused outhouse. It was much better the following days. The boats were large enough to be comfortable for our group of 22 at least. Upon returning to the dock we had to haul all our gear off the boats down the pier and wash and hang it. At least we didn't have to haul it back to the room too. As far as the diving..the coral was generally healthy, there were plenty of barrel and tube sponge, crinoids, anemones with their crabs, squid, morays, lots of spotted drum juv., a number of seahorses, rays ( one electric) , scorpionfish, butters, angelfish, octypus and wrasse, plus the other usual suspects. The water temp was a pretty steady 82 according to my thermomoter. Vis was not the greatest, but never terrible. Overall I would rate the diving only OK....but I am very spoiled by my trips to Indonesia, where I think the best diving worldwide is to be found. The island of Dominica is quite lovely and don't forget to do a few land trips. The gorge and also Trafalgar Falls are both beautiful and fun to experience.
