Comments My wife and I chose Dominica for the land based experiences available plus availability of diving and beach experience. But our desire for the combination of easy access to diving from beachfront accommodations led us to only one option through our research which was Picard Beach Cottages in Portsmouth on the northwest part of the island. The better diving may be south from Roseau, but we were quite satisfied with our diving experiences around Cabrits National Park utilizing JC Ocean Adventures. We rented a car from Courtesy Car Rental at the airport which is on the east coast of the island while the diving is on the west coast. The drive from our beach front cottage to JC Ocean Adventures was an easy 15 minutes or less. The folks at JC Ocean Adventures were easy going and professional. The dive sites were less than twenty minutes boat ride. The diving was very good, typical Caribbean, except at least one site had the additional magical experience of bubbles percolating up through the dramatic rock formations due to the volcanic nature of Dominica. We did repeat two sites during the four days of diving but that did not matter to us. There were 4-7 divers on the boat each day.

Picard Beach Cottages is located adjacent to Ross Medical College. Our beachfront cottage experience was only slightly affected by the students walking down the beach to the part of the beach where they often hung out. Otherwise the beach would have been practically all to ourselves. Reports on Trip Advisor and elsewhere of loud parties of Ross students disturbing the tranquility of Picard Beach customers fortunately did not occur while we were there.

After five days in Portsmouth we moved to Calibishe Cove [calibishiecove.com link] in part to have a shorter morning drive to the airport on our last day. The Rainforest Suite was very nice.

Our land experiences were fabulous. We took day trips on our own to Trafalgar Falls, Roseau, the Carib Territory, and Papillote Retreat for their amazing gardens and hot springs, among other places
