Comments From South Florida we left our house at 3:00am to catch a flight out of Miami Internat'l Airport at 6:00am, then a lay over in San Juan for 3 hours, arrived in Dominica around 2:00pm and then the hotel van drove us to the hotel an 1 1/2 hour away. The Fort Young Hotel is located on the opposite side of the island from the Airport, I would consider the hotel one of the nicest on the island. Skip the standard room and book the deluxe direct ocean view upgrade suite. Our initial assessment of the hotel staff was that they did not appear to be very friendly, however, by the end of our trip we found the complete opposite. Ken coordinates the dive operation out of the hotel and also owns the company that provides the hiking tours, he does a first class job. If you are uncertain as to the number of days you want to dive, book the minimum, you can always purchase the remaining dives ala carte, the rate is the same. Dive Dominica will not allow you a transfer unused dives to another person, even your spouse. The dive operation will pick up at the dock located behind the hotel around 8:30am, you return around 1:00pm - 2:00pm, only 8 to 12 divers aboard the boat most days with plenty of room. Dives were limited to 100' for 60 minutes, atleast 1 hour S.I., second dive was approx. 60' for 60 minutes, you had to follow the Dive Master on a tour of the reefs (after a few days when they were confident in our diving abilities they were more lenient, provided we informed them of our dive plan). Lots of interesting critters, frog fish, seahorses, anemonones, sponges, not too many large fish and no pelagics. Others have stated that Dominica is inexpensive, I would not consider that correct, it maybe cheaper than other Caribbean destinations but not cheap. Over all we had a wonderful trip.
