Comments This is a charming resort very accurately portrayed in the 2009 Chapbook. The rooms are clean and basic...nothing fancy. Get an ocean front room with the small balcony... a delightful place to sit, read, and listen to the waves lap against the shore, not more than 30' away. The previous manager, Jim, mentioned in many prior reviews has left the resort and been replaced by a great guy named "Seen". We ran into him every day and he always asked how things were going and if there was anything he could do for us. All staff is friendly, and service in the restaurant is actually fast....surprising by Caribbean standards. As soon as we sat in the restaurant we were immediately served by one of the wait staff and asked what we would like to drink. Food was good. Examples of what we ate....escargot in garlic butter sauce, smoked salmon, rack of lamb, filet mignon, prime rib (chef carved), etc etc. Or if you wished to keep it simple, they were always willing to fix you a cheeseburger with fries or a club sandwich. Meals were a mix of buffet or ordering off the menu. The resort actually went out of their way to set up a big screen TV for a friendly, great group of divers from Pittsburgh that we met, so they could watch their Steelers win the AFC championship. They set up an extra buffet for us, with burgers, dogs, wings, etc. They had a waiter just for us, to keep the beer flowing. My wife and I are currently on a diet to try to lose the weight we gained there.
The dive shop is efficiently run by Lynn. They rinse and hang your BCD every day on a numbered hanger- your hanger for the week. The next day it is back on the boat. BCD's are changed to a new tank for you between dives. The bigger boat is large enough to accommodate 20 divers comfortably, although we never had more than 11 during our week. The best diving is here at the west end of Curacao, so the sites are usually no more than 15-20 min away. There was no current during our week, but apparently sometimes there is, since the divemasters would warn us before the dives that they would signal us if there was a current, and then the dive would become a drift dive. Safety was a priority. O2 on board, roll calls, good dive briefings. Only draw back is that there is no head on the boat...avoid a lot of coffee on dive days unless you want to jump back in the water between dives and have everyone watch you, knowing what you're doing. heh heh. Fish life was profuse. Large schools of "flowing" blue chromis. We saw one turtle. Lots of filefish and eels. A pair of large porcupinefish swimming together and bumping into each other. We got within a few feet of a large, curious squid. You will probably see a frogfish, since Clark, our divemaster told us he would show us one before a certain dive, and it was right where he had predicted. Many many fish, although not much large stuff. The reefs are amazing...visit Mushroom Forest. The shore dive is cool. It can be as deep or as shallow as you want. Lots of great critters including a sea horse.
Overall, we had a great week. Although we rarely go back to the same place twice, since we like variety in our diving, we are considering returning to this place in a couple of years. One little travel tip. Know that American Airlines flights arrive in Curacao at 8PM and depart at 8AM. Unfortunately you lose a day at each end of your vacation to travel. We had to fly AA since we were using frequent flyer miles.
