Comments This was my forth trip to Cozumel over a twenty year time span. My wife had never been so I wanted to introduce her to the warm, clear waters of this cool little island and have her expereince drift diving. We also did a side trip to Tulum to dive a fresh water cavern also know as a cenote (a ferry ride over to the mainland and an hour or so drive away).

As great as the diving can be, I must say I have seen Cozumel change over the years both topside and below. But before I get into that I do have to say the resort staff and Divemasters were all very proffesional and accommodating. The food was good the chicken mole enchiladas my favorite! We purchased an all inclusive package that included airport transfer, accommodations, 3 meals a day, two tank boat dive and all of the shore diving you could ever want to do. Although the shore diving is great for a quick checkout dive it is not very remarkable otherwise. A few manmade concrete structures with resident sea life but that is about it. A night dive was included in our package as well. I paid extra for a wreck dive, the Felipe Xicotencatl, C53, but would not recommend it due to the swift current that I experienced when I dove it. Great dive when inside the wreck but a struggle when diving outside it.

The cost was very reasonable probably because it was during the shoulder season April - May. The room was clean, very well laid out and a quick walk to the dock. We felt very safe since there is a security guard at the entrance 24/7. Although I have never felt unsafe in all of my travels to this island.

While we were there my wife completed a PADI Rescue Diver Course which was well worth the money since she was the only student and William her instructor did a fabulous job. Not only did she learn the required skills but William's first hand experience was extremely insightful and helped her become a better diver.

We had the same dive boat and Divemaster, Geiser, during our stay who did a great job pointing out cool photo subjects. We met new friends on our trip and generally had a great time. Here are a two short videos from our trip.

The changes that I have seen over the years is due to the impact the cruise ships have made on Cozumel. In years past I always made a point of exploring the island and hanging out in what used to be the charming little town of San Miguel. As with most other Caribbean islands the cruise ships have altered the local flavor to just another port of call that all really looks the same. Same shops, restaurants and street vendors that we have seen in Grand Cayman, Bonaire etc. that cater to the tourists off the ships. Just replace the name on the t-shirts and other crap with Cozumel. So sad. On this trip we walked to town on our first evening and never left the resort compound after that.

After our stay at Scuba Club Cozumel we took the ferry over to the mainland (a 30 minute trip), rented a car and drove the hour or so to Tulum. I had always wanted to dive the fresh water cenotes. We did two dives in Dos Ojos. A very cool experience and I'm glad we took the time to do it. We were disappointed with the actual town of Tulum. Not as "eco" as they want you to think. The shoreline was choked with seaweed and eco resorts are lined up on after the other. We were in bumper to bumper traffic along the small road on this small stretch of coastline. It appears the area is growing to large without the proper infrastructure a disappointment for sure.

All in all we had a great time and we did some cool diving. The amount of big fish has definitely decreased over the twenty years since coming here and the local charm as I had mentioned is being eroded by the cruise ships and the flood of tourists.
