We dove with Living Underwater while in Cozumel in April during Easter Week. Our Dive Guide, Jeremy, made diving a real pleasure. While on the boat, he didn’t let any of the guests lift a finger. He worked hard to get divers ready and to make each dive entertaining and relaxing. Living Underwater is famous for the small number of divers per boat, big tanks, and long dives. On a few days, we were the only divers on the boat. We were never down for less than an hour and a half. This trip we dived with nitrox-36 on all second dives. It’s available for just a few dollars more and the added safety is worth it.
This year we saw an astonishing number of turtles. On one dive at Columbia Normal, we saw at least five turtles, some of them so bold that they came within a few feet of divers. We also saw the usual Cozumel denizens such as the splendid toad fish, a spotted scorpion fish, french and grey angel fish by the dozens, schools of grunts, and even a large spotted eagle ray at El Cedral. We also saw a juvenile trunkfish, about the size of a pea, fluttering around under an overhang.
After diving with us and others all morning, Jeremy worked on open water certification with our son in the afternoon. It was a yeoman’s work but Jeremy did it without complaint and certified our son in the week we were in Cozumel. During his last open water certification dive, Jeremy spotted a seahorse in front of the Hotel Lorena. Not a bad way to learn to dive.
Some restaurants worth visiting are Cocina de Caribe, an excellent seafood restaurant but with rather odd hours – it seems to close very early; La Cocay which was pricey but good; El Moro which is always good and sometimes serves a free anisette liqueur after dinner; and Guido's (previously called Pizza Rolandi) which went through some rough times but seems to be making a fabulous comeback. Huge margarita prize is a toss up between Capi Navigante and La Prima.
