Comments My wife and I, along with another nondiving couple, traveled to Cozumel for a spring break trip (Feb. 26 to March 5, 2005). We lost the equivelent of a day getting there because of a mechanical problem on a Continental flight. We were to arrive at 2:00pm on Feb. 26, but didn't arrive until 11:00am on the 27th, thus I lost some dive opportunities. We were treated to a complimentary drink upon arriving at the Hotel Cozumel. We did not want a ground floor room, but that is what we were assigned. After voicing our displeasure they changed the room. Dive Paradise is a well run organization. Upon arrival they quickly get you checked in and allow you to do a shore check-out dive. I was at first dismayed that I had been placed on what I knew was an older "slow" boat, but I came to like the smaller boats. Fewer people means more relaxed diving and more personal attention. Dive masters and crew try to be accomodating and they were friendly. Between dives one is served a sandwich, fruit, and a drink. I believe that the dive profiles were a bit conservative for a boat full of people that had dive computers. The divemaster always asked the group where they wanted to go (do or see) each day. No one mentioned tips, but most divers were tipping after each dive.
Midweek we decided to take the ferry to the mainland to visit the Mayan ruins at ChichenItza. Although the bus trip took all day I'm very glad to have seen these magnificent icons of the past.
Sights while diving were great, with either coral swim-throughs, walls, or coral beds on every dive. We saw no rays or sharks, but we did see turtles, large barracuda, lobster, crab, eels, quite a few spotted drums and lots of queen and french angles, grunts, silver sides, etc. The night dive was really special, don't miss it.
I would recommend the following restaurants: El Moro, Las Tortugas, or Primas. Although these restaurants are well known, they are well known for a reason. Everyone in our party had great meals.
Although I still plan on diving other noted Caribbean locations, I always will be drawn to Cozumel for its world class diving, safe environment, friendly people, and reasonable prices.
