Comments This 12 night charter was my fourth to Cocos and the third one on this boat. Nevertheless, the decision to join this trip was made with some trepidation given reports on El Nino conditions affecting sightings of pelagics. Interestingly, our logbooks indicated similar water temperatures as on other trips. Perhaps the thermoclines were lower this time. The hammerheads were there, but a little deeper than we remembered.

Most dives were outstanding. I would rate one of them as being in my lifetime top 10. I spent at least 20 minutes in the company dolphins, harrassing a school of jacks. My tank was sucked dry on this one. In other memorable dives we rescued a turtle caught in fishing lines and a whale shark made a brief appearance. There were a couple of the signature 'wallpaper' sightings with the schools of hammerheads overhead. We saw eagle rays, galapagos, graytips and a manta or two. We didn't encounter the tiger sharks, though.

Boat facilities were excellent, as always. My companion thought the food was better this time. The team, headed by Nelson, was great. We felt particularly fortunate to be with divemaster Mao (Mauricio) and boat driver Pepe (Jose_. After leading us on a great dive, Mao would corral us like an expert dolphin and Pepe would pluck us out of the surface like an practiced boobie. Yossi and Avi, you got to look after these two!

It is also worth noting that unlike previous trips, the fishing boats were at least not visible on this one. It may have to do with the fact that the rangers had two operating boats this time - and were using them. It's about time. Sadly, it appears they are too late for the silvertips. We saw them a couple of years ago at Silverado. Alas, the divemasters told us they haven't seen them since.

One point of concern is the number of boats that are now starting to operate here. For many years it was only 3 boats that would come here. On many days on previous trips ours was the only boat around. Now with the Argo, Adventure, Wind Dancer and Yemaya there are seven. Considering that everyone wants to always dive on Dirty Rock or Alcyone (with Punta Maria and Dos Amigos often inaccessible due to ocean conditions), the pressure on the best dive sites is going to be tremendous.
