Comments Getting to Drake Bay on the Osa Penninsula from Sierpe required a water taxi of about 1 hour through the mangroves. From here you can access Canos Island by boat. As we were travelling and diving in the off season the diving was farmed out to another operator. We were picked up at the wharf and all our gear was loaded for us on the small boat. We were the only Scuba divers with 3 other snorkelers on board. The boat trip from Drake Bay was about 1 hour, with dolphins spotted along the way. We arrived at the first dive site; a pinnacle. Entry was step or back roll. I chose back roll due to ease of entry, as I said the boat was small and we were pitching in the swell. No current and only a small surge; there were lots of fish upon entry and descent to 50 to 60 ft. Within minutes we saw the Manta Rays, it was pretty exciting. They were within 30 to 40 ft from us. The visibility was poor at around a depth of 50 feet with an algae bloom but the rays stayed close so we were able to view them a number of times, there were at least 3 of them. There were also schools of many different fish including barracuda's. White tip reef sharks were also in the neighbourhood. Our second dive was a bit less exciting but we saw a number of white tips. Thermoclines were abundant as well affecting the visibility and the chill factor as we were only in shorties. No ladder on the boat just a swim platform made exiting the water a bit challenging. A 3 tank dive would have been better having travelled that far by boat. We brought our own gear and the resort took care of it;we didn't have to lift a finger. Lunch and drinks were provided. The DM was also pretty good. Although the equipment storage was not great. La Paloma Lodge is a very nice place to stay and enjoy the beaches and jungle. So there are things to do other than just diving if the weather takes a turn or for a non diving spouse. We would go back at a time when the vis is better.
