Comments The good: Just about everything. This was our 6th trip to Pirates Point since 1995. One of the inducements to subscribing to Undercurrent was a booklet of the best places to dive. Included in the booklet was a review of Pirates Point. We decided to try it after reading the review and have been going back ever since. Gladys Howard, the owner, and her staff make you feel like family and you really are. We have been going the beginning of August for the last 3 years and have become good friends with a group of people from all over that also comes at this time. In addition to repeat customers, the staff typically have been with her for years. I have been other places in succeeding years and found a total change of staff. Turn-over is low at Pirates Point. The Bloody Bay wall is truly one of the best places in the world to dive. Swimming out from the boat in 25 ft. of water over the edge of a sheer wall that drops off for 6000 ft. is the closest to flying that I have ever experienced. The coral is generally in great shape, the fish life prolific, and there are lots of turtles. In the last several year the number of sharks has also increased. The Cayman marine park is really working. One dive site even has a resident Nassau Grouper that likes to be petted like a cat, even though no feeding is allowed. Besides the world class diving the food is out of this world. We were there for 2 weeks this year and I gained 5 pounds.

The bad: Pirates Point, like everyplace in the Caymans, is not cheap, but compared with other places I have been it is worth the premium price for a premium experience. I gained 5 lbs. Not much else.

UW Photo Comments Photographers get exclusive use of the top shelf of the table on the boat. For this trip there were only a few of us so this was more than ample. The rinse tank is a converted cooler. The water is changed frequently, but because of the small size most times all your camera gets is a dip before it goes back on the table. Back at the resort there is a deep sink devoted to camera rinsing. I typically put the camera in on our return and retrieved it just before dinner, several hours later. On the boat the crew was always quick to hand you your camera once you were in the water and to take it from you at the end of the dive.
