Comments This was our 21st visit to Pirates Point in what has become an annual "must do." As usual, the water was warm, clear, generally close to flat, with no currents. It's about as easy diving as it gets. We had divers from newly certified teenagers to an 88 year old and the Pirates Point divemasters handled everyone equally well. The food was great, as usual. I will note that I did a better job of curbing my appetite this year as I only gained 1 pound per week rather than the usual 2+. I will also note that the evening chef left at the end of the season to join her significant other and start a restaurant in California. I fully expect that, whoever the replacement is, the food will continue to be one of the highlights. There was concern when Gladys Howard, the founder, died almost 2 years ago that the resort might be sold and it would change significantly. I can happily report that Susan, Gladys' daughter, has taken over without missing a beat. In fact, she has done a lot to paint, remodel, and generally spruce up the place. She is doing a major project each shutdown. This year she is going to redo both the dining room and bar area. As far as the diving goes this was the best year since the lionfish arrived. I only saw 3 lionfish in the 2 weeks of 2 dives/day that averaged 90 minutes each dive. The arrow blennies were back on the wall in numbers. (They were one of the first species to disappear after the lionfish arrived.) I also saw my usual, at least one new thing. This year it was a pair of banded jawfish, which I had never seen before, on the Soto Trader site, and I saw my first loggerhead turtle. Although I did not see it, one of the divemasters did a shore dive the day we arrived and saw a whale shark. This was also a big year for turtle nests. There were several on the property and the local authorities had counted on the order of 150 on the island.

UW Photo Comments There's a plastic bin full of water on the boat to keep the housing wet. Back at the resort there is a big dedicated outside sink to rinse cameras. Since I was the only one with a housed camera I could soak the housing for several hours every afternoon after we returned to the resort.
