Comments Pirates Point is a well run, friendly, relaxed dive operation. Two long dives a day, leaving at around 9 am and returning to the resort around 2 pm. The boat is comfortable and the dive staff top-notch. The dive groups were a little large when we were there -- 6-10 divers -- but once the staff knew our dive style they were happy for me and my buddy to depart from the group for most of the dive.

The atmosphere at Pirates Point itself is more like a liveaboard than a big beach resort -- most divers are there for a week or so starting on Saturday, and everyone eats together, so you get to know the other divers (as well as the dive staff, who also help out at meals) pretty well. The food is truly amazing -- high quality, creative, varied, delicious and plentiful.

The (justly) famous walls, and the shallower areas, seem to be in good condition as far as coral and sponge cover go, though there are some algael areas. Most sites were not extremely fishy -- few clouds or large schools of fish -- but the usual families were all represented, and the friendly groupers, who sometimes tag along with the group for 10 or 15 minutes, make for some special encounters. We saw reef sharks on several sites as well as one nurse shark. Stingrays are plentiful, and an eagle ray made an appearance on one dive, though I missed it. Several turtleson the wall and a number of lazy barracudas hanging in the shallows. Only a couple of lionfish sighted in our five days of diving.

If you can dodge the tropical storms, as we were lucky enough to do, July seems to be a good time for Little Cayman. The seas were pretty flat and the visability was fantastic, which made the walls and canyons all the more dramatic. On the negative side, it was too hot to explore the nature trial or the iguana and booby reserves; maybe we'll try coming in November next time.
