Comments This was our 13th trip to Pirates Point and Gladys' 25th anniversary in business. August would not be the same without our annual pilgrimage to visit Gladys and her staff. (Some of whom predate our first visit in 1995. The turnover being low so that you develop a friendship with everyone.) You can read my reviews from previous years in the Undercurrent archives. The diving is, in our opinion, the best in the Caribbean and the food is as good as the diving. At least in August, the diving is also some of the easiest you will find anywhere with warm, flat water, great visibility, and generally no currents. Things were even better than usual this year. We had several dives with visibility well in excess of 100 ft. Also, the dive operations on Little Cayman have jointly gone after the lionfish such that we averaged seeing a lionfish on less than every other dive (including dives on the south side of the island which is not often dived in the summer). The operators take turns providing a boat every Wednesday afternoon and all the divemasters who are not otherwise occupied go lionfish hunting. Bob, one of the Pirates Point divemasters, has personally taken over 1500 lionfish since they started hunting. There were a number of reef sharks this year. We had one dive where 3 sharks circled around us for about 15 to 20 minutes. There were also the usual large number of turtles, including 2 greens. The turtles have become acclimated to divers and a number of them will continue about their business while you take their picture. I got some great shots. I will also comment that Gladys does not advertise and relies on word-of-mouth and repeat customers. For the 2 weeks we were there this year there were only a couple of people that we did not know from previous trips which kind of says it all about how good the diving and operation are.
