Comments Cayman Islands was on our bucket list. We had good friends recommend Pirates Point and Little Cayman, and we were not disappointed. Pirates Point has 10 rooms, so it is never over crowded. The airport is just a short drive/walk from Pirates Point. Gay Morse goes out of her way to make your stay enjoyable. From the time she picks up at the airport to the time she takes you back.

We had an ocean view room, which was clean and comfortable. The ocean view rooms do not have air conditioning which was fine with me, but my husband was uncomfortable sometimes. There was some concern about ‘no see-ums’ but we didn’t have a problem. Air conditioned rooms are available, but they aren’t ocean side.

The food is delicious. Winston and Dianne as the chefs are wonderful. They willl make you anything you need, especially with special diets. Dianne opens the kitchen in the morning with a song! I am an early riser and would get my first cup of coffee listening to Dianne cooking breakfast and singing away. Meals are served buffet style, with all the guests sitting together at one big table or separate smaller tables.

We were the only couple to be at Pirates Point for our first time. The other divers had been coming to Pirates Point for 10 or more years, and more than one time a year. In addition Gay has been at Pirates Point since Gladys (now deceased) had opened. Several other dive masters and cooks have been at Pirates Point for 10 or more years. That says a lot.

The Dive Masters, Michelle, Nathan, Tiago, and Cameron go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your diving. The dive boat is large and accommodating. We never dove with more than 8 divers. They help “walk” you from your location on the boat to the back of the boat, where you do a giant stride to get in. However, if you can’t do a giant stride they will help you put your gear on and gently sit on the back of the boat and ‘fall in’. To get back on to the boat you hand up your fins, and they encourage you to climb back up the ladder, but if you are unable to do that they will help you. I enjoyed the challenge of climbing up with my gear. (Exercise!). Most of the days the seas were calm, and/or 1-2 foot waves. One day however, we had 4-5 foot seas. They were very good at instructing us how to get back on the boat safely. Fortunately, the 3 of us diving have had that experience before so it was no problem.

The water was warm! For me that was a thrill. 86 degrees give or take. I dove with a skin, but several others just dove with their swim trunks on. The dive masters work to help trim your weights so that you are diving with ease. They go out of their way to find critters for you. I couldn’t believe how they found some of the tiniest creatures. Head Shield Slugs, Lancer Dragonet, Pipe Fsh, Pipe Horse, and lots of tiny nudibranchs. We had to use a magnifying glass to appreciate these tiny critters.

In addition to the smalls, we saw Eagle Rays on almost every dive. Bloody Bay wall was what was expected, but you would have to have lights to see the colors better. I couldn’t believe how many Groupers we saw. Little Cayman has one of the last Grouper Spawning events in the world, and because of that the fishing and Groupers are protected. We found a few Lion Fish, but we were not allowed to spear them. The dive masters take special training and Cayman Islands specifies how big a spear they can use. Gay has put together an every Wednesday night dive event for all the dive masters on the island, and they go spear fishing the Lion Fish. They have done a pretty good job getting them off the reef. They are working with Groupers to try to teach them to eat the Lion Fish. Time will tell.

We enjoyed everything about the island. From the Magnificent Frigate Birds, and Red Footed Boobies, to the Indigenous Iguanas.

Little Cayman is small enough that on our last day we rented scooters. We rented them for the day and that was perfect.
