Comments I had previously visited Little Cayman twice, once during late spring and once during mid-summer. Visiting in December made me realize that in winter the sun doesn’t strike the north wall directly as it does in spring and summer, so the colors of that marvelous area don’t come out as well then. However, there was plenty to see and lots of healthy coral growth. Winter weather can be rough in that the seas aren’t as calm as the summer. We had two days of high waves on the north side, with the resort on the south side, so diving was not as easy as it might be. One day we had to abort our trip to the north side due to wave action, so we dove the south wall, which still gave us nice views that would have been sunlit had the clouds not blocked the sun. After those two days, we regularly made our trips to the north-side sites as the waves subsided.

Large groupers, both Nassau and Black, inhabit some of those north dive sites. These fish are friendly and hang around divers easily. I saw a green moray hunting with a black grouper shadowing it. We saw several turtles during the week, one nurse shark, numerous rays, shrimp in anemones and the largest spiny lobster I’ve seen in 23 years of diving. Vis was generally 60 feet or more, with water temp around 79 F.

The resort is nicely laid out, with 2-story units of rooms on either side of the bar and pool area behind the front building. The restaurant is in the front building, and was perhaps 50 feet from our room. Meals were served family style, with a nice variety of dishes for each meal. Tables were available for indoor or outdoor (screened-in porch) eating. We chose outdoor usually to enjoy the nice temperature. The well-equipped dive shop was within 75’ of our room, heading the opposite way from the front building. Beyond that was the dive dock, with nice sized dive boats that usually had 6-8 divers each. Each boat had a covered area to avoid the sun. The longest boat trip to a dive site was maybe 15 minutes. Dive masters were friendly and helpful. My son got certified there by Dottie, a personable and lively instructor.

For other recreation, you can use one of the resort’s bicycles to take a ride on the island. Since Little Cayman is only 10 miles long and one mile wide, you can see the whole island in a few rides. Iguanas roam freely and have the right-of-way. There is a lagoon where one can go bird watching at the Booby Pond Reserve, explore mangrove forests or enjoy the views of the sea. LC is only 40 feet high at its highest, so there are no hills to climb. The pool area has plenty of chairs and lounges for reading or just hanging out. You can also hang in a hammock by the beach.

With an all-inclusive package, there is no need to find restaurants for meals or to worry about space on a dive boat. Drinks or food at the bar is extra, but having a non-alcohol family made this almost a non-issue for me. Getting there involves flying to Grand Cayman, then a short hop on Cayman Airways to LC.

UW Photo Comments Since I was diving with family and have taken many UW photos in this area previously, I didn't concentrate on the facilities or bring my regular photo gear, so I wasn't keenly observing the ease with which photos were taken or presented.
