Comments I found the complaints about the Cayman Aggressor IV in your July issue to be nitpicking complaints that could be made about any live aboard. Having been aboard the same boat and with the same crew in April, I disagree strongly about the nature and relevance of the complaints. I have well over 1,000 dives and have been on more than twenty different live aboards in the Caribbean, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, Western Pacific, South Pacific, and Eastern Pacific. Seven of these have been Aggressors. The Cayman Aggressor IV was up to Aggressor standards. I found the boat to be in excellent condition, the crew friendly and competent and the food good. Capt. Sam was good natured and responsive to our requests.

As to the particular complaints, I deem them without merit. First, if the marine heads clogged it’s probably because someone was not using them properly. We had no problem with the heads on our trip, but, as is true with every live aboard, we were cautioned in their use. Second, the complaint that the generator was off line for a “short period” tells me the problem was corrected quickly and did not interfere with the trip in any way. What a silly complaint. Sometimes there are minor glitches on any boat and no basis to complain if the problem is quickly fixed.

I’ve never been on a live aboard where there wasn’t a caution about conserving water. Capt. Sam gave no further comment about conserving water after the initial briefing. The fact that he had to make additional comments about conserving water on a particular trip tells me the guests on that trip were not cooperating in water conservation. A large gear rinse tank was provided, but Capt. Sam did suggest that it was not necessary to rinse off a wet suit in fresh water after every dive and asked that wet suits only be rinsed when necessary. This was a perfectly reasonable request that gave nothing to complain about. Likewise, there is no reason to hose off or rinse a BC and regulator after every dive, but on our trip the crew did not refuse, if asked, to rinse off a BC when hosing the deck.

Not going into the interior of the boat in a wet bathing suit and not carrying deck towels into the cabins makes perfect sense and I have seen the same request made on many live aboards. As pointed out there was a head and two other small rooms off the dive deck where a change could be made. This was a request and not once during our trip was there any attempt to enforce the request in any way, even though I saw guests go to their rooms with wet bathing suits .

There was always a crew member, and usually two, in the water on every dive and we were always invited to follow them if we wished. We were treated as if we knew what we were doing and no demand was made that we follow a crew member. The complaint that “there were not many offers by the crew to provide guided tours” is downright ridiculous from what I saw with the same crew.

When I was on the boat with my cameras, and I have an elaborate set up and am very careful with it, the water in the camera rinse tank was always clean and fresh.

Finally, the fact that the cabins are cramped is true on any live aboard.

I found the Cayman Aggressor IV to be a very good boat, run be a friendly Captain who was engaged with and very accessible to the passengers together with a first rate crew. I’d give it an A for overall performance.
