Comments This is the very best of diving, albeit in cold water and with currents, but that is what makes it so great!

As they say, it's not the water temperature that counts but your own comfort - bring a good arctic-style wetsuit or dry suit. Visibility varies but, generally speaking, is better in the winter and early spring and deteriorates during the warmer summer months (high water in area rivers and plankton blooms).

Abyssal no longer has it's own lodge (a shame) but we always stay at Whiskey Point Resort, right above the docks, and have a great time - great views from every room and we enjoy group cooking of our main meals, although Earl (of Abyssal) will provide meals ion site, if you wish (he's a good cook).

The dive boat is purpose-built and excellent for diving - usually heads out for each dive just before slack (high or low tide), retuning to the lodge between dives. Just step off the boat at the entry point and the boat will come and pick you up at the end of your dive. Earl is great at knowing when to put divers in the water and fantastic at knowing where every diver is all the time. We never had to wait more than just a few minutes for the boat to come and get us after our dives, no matter how far we strayed from the rest of the divers.

I've been diving here for many, many years and recommend it to any diver wanting great diving - there is so much to see that it's often over-whelming for new divers. Expect currents and cool-ish water, but definitely do-able for even newer divers. We've often seen Sea Lions and Seals and Pacific White-sided Dolphins during our dives, as well all the regular stuff. Enjoy the very best!

UW Photo Comments This is a photographers dream-come-true. There is so much to see and take photos of that you will easily burn through a set of batteries in no time - bring strobes and lots of space on your SD cards - both a macro and wide-angle mecca - the opportunities abound, although it can be a challenge on some dives due to the currents, there usually ample opportunities to duck in and grab great photos.

Lots of corals, sponges (many kinds and colours), small critters, many kinds and sizes of nudibranchs, snails, stars, small, medium-size and larger fish, crab and so many other animals too numerous to mention.
