Comments This was our sixth trip to Bonaire and our third at Habitat Bonaire. Their motto "The home of diving freedom", means you can dive at anytime day or night by setting aside a tank for your use. Bonaire is best known for its shore diving with reefs beginning within 100 feet of shore. All you do is look for the yellow painted rock with the name of the dive sight and jump in. Bonaire has some of the healthiest reefs in the Caribbean, due in part, to the entire shoreline designated a marine sanctuary. Fish life is somewhat limited and larger fish are rare. However, we did have sightings of tarpon, mackerel, schooling jacks, and an eagle ray. There were friendly turtles on several dives.
Habitat Bonaire is located just north of the main town of Kralendijk. They offer several room options including deluxe sea view rooms, junior suites, and 2, 3, and 3 bedroom bungalows. Junior suites and sea view rooms are nearly identical with the only difference being location and amenities. Meal plans are available. We choose the breakfast only option, since Bonaire has dozens of excellent restaurants for your evening meal. Dive operations are conveniently located at the center of the resort. Individual gear lockers are adjacent to the boat dock (be sure to bring your own lock), and a separate dock is available for shore diving. Habitat Bonaire has several well-equipped boats. Divers sign up for dives on a chalk board for scheduled dives at 8:30, 10:00, and 2:00. All dives are within 10 minutes of the dock, so you can return to shore for your surface interval.
With an abundance of easy shore diving sites, calm seas, and health reefs, Bonaire is the ideal Caribbean dive destination.
